LIGUE 1: MESSI SUFFERS A SETBACK IN HIS QUEST TO BREAK RONALDO'S INCREDIBLE RECORD AFTER PSG'S SUSPENSION
Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain has been denied the opportunity to break Cristiano Ronaldo's remarkable record after his suspension.
PSG fined Messi for an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia on Monday.
Argentina's World Cup winner will now miss PSG games for two weeks.
Messi will now miss PSG's Ligue 1 games against Troyes and Ajaccio, denying him the opportunity to add to his 15 league goals this season.
However, it also hurts Messi's chances of breaking Ronaldo's record of scoring at least 20 Premier League goals in 13 consecutive seasons.
Ronaldo never scored more than 20 league goals in a season during his nine years with Real Madrid, only once with Manchester United in the 2007-2008 season.
Portugal's captain did the same three times with Juventus (2018-2019, 2019-2020, and 2020-2021).
Messi currently shares the record with Ronaldo, having scored 20 goals in each of his last 13 seasons with Barcelona before joining PSG in 2021.
As a result of his suspension, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner may have to wait a little longer.
Messi only scored six goals in his first year at PSG as he struggled to adjust to his new surroundings. This season, however, the 35-year-old has rediscovered his shooting shoes.
