Buhari Requests Senate Authorisation To Pay $556 Million, £98 Million, And N226 Billion For Judgment Debts
President Muhammadu Buhari has requested approval from the Senate for the settlement of judgment debts levied against the federal government by various courts.
The judgment obligations, according to the president, were $556,712,584,01; £98,526,013; and N226,280,801,801,64 in various currencies.
The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, read a letter containing Mr. Buhari's request at Wednesday's Senate plenary.
The president encouraged the Senate to ask the Attorney General of the Federation and the financial team of the Ministry of Budget and National Planning for more information on the judgment debts.
The president claimed in the letter that the debts were paid back through the issuance of promissory notes following judgments against federal ministries, departments, and agencies of the federal government.
He pointed out that on March 29, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had approved the settlement of the judgment obligations.
