On April 12, 2023, a seven-story building at the 'The Woodlands development' in Banana Island, Lagos, fell. The collapsed building was a seven-story structure that was part of a four-block development that was still under construction.

This is the first significant collapse in Lagos this year 2023, and according to an article we published last year, Lagos state has had an average of 4.8 collapses per year over the last 5 years.

This comes less than two years after the collapse of a seven-story building by Fourscore Development, which killed up to 50 people in November 2021. We have recorded 5 other collapses in the state prior to this one since then. The construction was unapproved, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

Joe Faraday Ltd is developing The Woodlands, a luxury home complex on 102 Close, Banana Island. The building has 72 units with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6-bedroom flats.

The cause of the collapse is still unknown. Further information will be provided.
