With a succession of brilliant performances for Croatia at the past World Cup, the kid is largely regarded as one of the top defenders in the world.

Chelsea's owners made a massive £77 million deal for the player during the summer, but it was rejected by Leipzig in the last days of the window.

Vidic, a Manchester United icon, has expressed his admiration for Gvardiol, comparing him to current United star Lisandro Martinez in his desire to defend.

Vidic remarked on Vibe with Five with former colleague Rio Ferdinand, "I always loved young defenders.

"So Gvardiol is someone I really like."
