BUHARI HAS APPROVED THE POSTPONEMENT OF THE 2023 CENSUS
The 2023 Population and Housing Census has been postponed by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari made the announcement Friday night after meeting with members of the Federal Executive Council and the National Population Commission.
He stated that the previously scheduled Census, which was to take place from May 3-7, will be chosen by the incoming administration.
On Saturday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, issued a statement that stated, "In arriving at the decision to postpone the Census, the meeting reiterated the critical need for the conduct of a Population and Housing Census, 17 years after the last Census, to collect up-to-date data that will drive the developmental goals of the country and improve the living standard of the Nigerian people."
He stated that with the completion of the country's Enumeration Area Demarcation, the conduct of first and second pretests, the recruitment and training of ad hoc workers, the procurement of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and ICT infrastructures, and the procurement of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and ICT infrastructures, significant progress had been made in the implementation of the 2023 Population and Housing Census.
He also praised the Commission's technique for conducting accurate and reliable censuses, particularly the vast deployment of technology capable of producing world-class censuses and creating a sustainable foundation for future censuses.
Buhari also urged the Commission to continue planning for the 2023 Population and Housing Census in order to sustain the advances previously made and create a foundation for the new administration to build on.
