According to Bashir Jamoh, Director-General of Nigeria's Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, the blue economy has the potential to create 350 million employment in Nigeria if properly utilized.

He bemoaned the sector's underutilization in Nigeria, calling the condition as "sea-blindness."


Jamoh revealed this in an interview with Channels Television on Monday.


He urged the federal government to seize the vast opportunities in the blue economy.


According to him, the fisheries industry and its value are sufficient to support the country's fragile economy.

He stated, "So, it is left for every country to stimulate what they can maximize from the 350 million jobs in the blue economy alone.


"If you take fishing, you take wind energy; now we are having a problem with energy; if you take wind energy, it is underutilized."


According to the World Bank, the Blue Economy is the sustainable utilization of ocean resources for economic growth and development.
