WHY EKWEREMADU'S WIFE WAS TAKEN TO JAIL RIGHT AWAY

Her attorney, Anu Mohindru, KC, attempted to have her remain on conditional bail until the provisional day of sentencing on Friday, May 5, 2023, after last Thursday's historic organ harvesting conviction of the former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice, alongside Dr. Obinna Obeta at the Central Criminal Court, also known as the Old Bailey. However, the Crown's Hugh Davies, KC, who had raised the

Mohindru argued that the daughter of the couple should be taken into account by the court. Davies persuaded the judge that the Ekweremadus have the means to enable the Senator's wife to jet out of the United Kingdom, including by using "forged identification documents." Sonia, who is rumored to occasionally "black out," needs support to attend her three times weekly dialysis sessions at the Royal Free Hospital.

The forged affidavit that was laid out during the trial was cited by the prosecutor to support his claims.

He believed that if they could fabricate documents to show that Sonia and David Nwamini—the individuals who started the case on May 5 of last year when David Nwamini went to the police to report being trafficked to the UK by unidentified individuals—were maternal cousins, Mrs. Ekweremadu could do the same to leave the country.

Mohindru made a counterargument, pointing out that the fake documents were created in Nigeria rather than the UK, but the judge wouldn't budge.

He agreed with the Crown's stance despite the fact that she had "maintained the bail conditions" and consistently "arrived in court on time." She was not permitted to leave the dock with Sonia; instead, she was immediately sent down and taken to prison.

Justice Johnson argued that he wasn't going to take any chances by granting Mrs. Ekweremadu a few weeks of freedom when Mohindru urged the judge to be compassionate, taking into account in particular Sonia's needs and the emotional toll of her parents' convictions.
