LECTURER WAS DETAINED WITH N306,700, AND A WOMAN HAD 18 PVCS
Dr. Cletus Tyokyaa, a lecturer at the Sarwuan Tarka University in Makurdi, Benue State (formerly known as the University of Agriculture), was detained on Saturday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedly purchasing votes.
He had N306,700 in various denominations hidden in his car when he was taken into custody at the RCM Polling Unit in Daudu, Guma Local Government Area of the state.
In addition, the commission said that it had detained Maryam Mamman Alhaji in Kaduna's Badarwa neighborhood with 18 voter registration cards.
"She was nabbed after undercover operatives pretended they had voter cards and were desperate to sell them.
"She is currently being grilled by operatives of the Kaduna Zonal Command of the EFCC, with a view to unravelling other members of her syndicate whom she claimed are also collecting voters' cards and paying monies through PoS or direct bank transfers."
Tarka's luck ran ended, according to an EFCC statement posted on its Facebook page, when "he drove to the voting centre which was different from his polling unit and tried to run upon sighting operatives of the Commission."
In a similar vein, the commission reported that it had detained a man (name withheld) at the Gidan Zakka polling place in the Goron Dutse neighborhood of Kano Municipal Local Government, Kano State, for allegedly purchasing votes with N194,000.
