FG HAS APPROVED USING MOTHER TONGUE AS THE PRIMARY LANGUAGE OF EDUCATION

A new National Language Policy that makes mother tongue a required medium of instruction from Primary one to Primary six has been authorized by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

On Wednesday, November 30, President Muhammadu Buhari presided over a council meeting in Abuja, and Minister of Education Adamu Adamu informed reporters of the results.

He disclosed that the mother tongue will be utilized exclusively for the first six years of education and then coupled with the English language beginning in junior secondary school while stating that the government is aware that implementation will be challenging.

Even if the policy has been put into place, in his opinion, it cannot be completely executed until the government creates instructional materials and has access to trained teachers.

According to him, each school will utilize the language that is most often spoken in the neighborhood where it is located as the mother tongue.
