The court directs the police to release the suspect and compensate Nnamdi Kanu's supporter N50 million
On Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja issued an order directing Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector General of Police, to free Mazi Solomon Onyegbule, a supporter of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
In addition, Kanu's supporter was given N50 million as "compensatory and exemplary damages" by Justice Z.B. Abubakar, who issued the order on Tuesday.
Ifeanyi Ejiofor, an attorney for Kanu and IPOB, said in a statement that the court also mandated that the police publicly apologize to Solomon Onyegbule.
He said, "While delivering judgment in suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/137/2022, we had filed on behalf of Solomon Onyegbule, the court directed the Inspector- General of Police, IGP to unconditionally release Mazi Onyegbule from their custody forthwith.
"The court further awarded the sum of N50 million only in favour of Solomon Onyegbule as compensatory and exemplary damages.
"The court also ordered the Inspector General of Police tenders a public apology to Mazi Solomon in one national newspaper."
Ejiofor stated that his group would keep working to release and pay those Igbos who had been wrongfully jailed in various security agency institutions across the nation.
