A soldier from the 25 Task Force Brigade in Borno went on the rampage on Thursday, killing a female charity worker while seriously wounding a UN pilot. He also killed another soldier by shooting him.
According to reports, if not for the swift action of his teammates, who murdered him, he would have claimed more lives.
The Theatre Command of "Operation Hadin Kai" responded to the tragedy by expressing remorse for the terrible event that occurred at one of its military sites.
Samson Zhakom, the assistant director of army public relations, said that a soldier killed a staff member of an NGO working to provide help in the Northeast.
"Same soldier also killed another soldier and injured the co-pilot of one of the UN helicopters. Own troops on the ground immediately neutralised the errant
The injured co-pilot had been stabilized, he said, while the deceased's bodies had been transported to the 7 Division Hospital.
He further stated that a thorough inquiry into the issue and following corrective measures had begun.
The soldier reportedly left his post in the outlying Borno town of Damboa on Thursday and went on a shooting rampage with an Ak47 rifle, according to information obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
"He stabbed a female staff of one of the international NGOS four times, killing her before injuring the helicopter pilot," Mr Ibrahim said.
In order to avert a worsening situation, Mr. Ibrahim stated that the raging soldier turned around once again and raced after his fellow soldiers before being shot dead.
According to him, the pilots and the crew had returned safely to Maiduguri, and work was being done at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital to stabilize the injured co-pilot.
