35 YEARS AFTER GRADUATION, GOV. UGWUANYI'S HUMILITY IS STILL PRESENT
Friends from the Enugu State governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi's 1987 finance class at the University of Nigeria's Enugu Campus (UNEC) have said that the people of Enugu State are fortunate to have Ugwuanyi in charge of the state's affairs, particularly at this pivotal time in the nation's history.
Members of UNEC's 1987 Finance Class expressed their joy and gratitude to God that Gov. Ugwuanyi has continued to be as modest, calm, focused, and visionary as he was when they were students there and emphasized how proud they are of him.
The governor hosted Gov. Ugwuanyi's classmates for a culture night meal at the Government House in Enugu as part of their re-union activities there 35 years after they graduated.
The dinner was followed by a trip to UNEC's Department of Banking and Finance the following day, which inspired Governor Ugwuanyi and his classmates to reflect exhilaratingly on their days of labor, play, and lighting candle at midnight in the name of academic success.
Gov. Ugwuanyi and his classmates addressed the Finance Class students during their visit to UNEC, wishing them success in life and motivating them to stay committed to their goals of becoming future leaders.
Pastor Emeka Roland Ifeonu, a member of the class, thanked God for allowing the reunion to take place in his goodwill message at the meal, saying: "God has been so good to us 35 years after we parted. Most of us are seeing for the first time; it is just the mercy of God."
He praised Governor Ugwuanyi for having a distinctive personality and called him a great achiever and a man of the people.
Another classmate of Gov. Ugwuanyi, Mr. Ben Uba, stated that the governor is; in reference to the Old Testament account where David was a Mercy Carrier but King Saul did not recognize the Mercy Carrier and it lost him his kingdom.
He continued, making more reference to the OldSpeaking tale: "Your Excellency, the Governor of Enugu State, my dear classmate, we have come to appreciate our own Gburugburu (Ugwuanyi) worldwide. Gburugburu you will live long, no man will stop you, no woman will stop you, you will get to your Promised Land in the Mighty Name of Jesus, amen."
On behalf of his classmates, Mr. Ike Duru presented Gov. Ugwuanyi with gifts as a sign of their collective thanks and solidarity. He said that the governor's humility was the reason they had come together 35 years later.
"when he entered, he called all of us by name, that shows who he is, he is the same person he was in 1987.
"I want to tell Enugu State that you people are lucky to have somebody like him. Sir, we are your classmates, we are very proud of you."
The 1987 Finance Class had earlier spent a moment of silence in memory of their deceased classmates.
Gov. Ugwuanyi welcomed his classmates to the Lion Building, Government House, Enugu, and noted that the occasion was special and a reflection of their backgrounds.
"Those days of lofty dreams and great ambitions yet shrouded in uncertainty of what life had in stock for us; and most importantly, the friendship we enjoyed in our youth.
"It is also desirable that on the sidelines of this event, we seek and engage our lecturers who were key to our learning and character moulding", Gov. Ugwuanyi said.
Gov. Ugwuanyi said the following while praying for the departed classmates' spirits: "For those who have passed, may their gentle souls rest in peace through the kindness of God in Jesus Name. We miss them and love them.
"For those of us who could not make this trip, I extend my best regards to them wherever they are."
The governor enthusiastically acknowledged the remarkable achievements of the UNEC 1987 Finance Class in various fields of life, saying that, "it is remarkable that this re-union is holding at a time one of us is holding sway as the Servant Leader of this State", adding: "I hold this on trust for Ndi Enugu and indeed all of you."
Additionally, Gov. Ugwuanyi expressed his joy that, "the stellar achievements of our classmates present one of the finest stories of a class of students who have lived their dreams and we certainly wear many Badges of Honour", saying: "It also pleased God and the good people of Enugu State that I be elected for two term as the Governor of the state.
"I therefore invite you to enjoy the great ambience and serenity of the Coal City while wishing us an exciting re-union experience and bliss."
In her vote of appreciation, former Chief of Staff, Government House, Enugu, Chief Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for making the reunion special on behalf of the UNEC 1987 Finance Class. She also thanked God for the gift of life, good health, and wealth.
