[WATCH] RIOT BREAKS OUT AFTER A FOOTBALL MATCH IN INDONESIA, KILLING AT LEAST 174 PEOPLE
At least 174 people were killed and around 180 were injured in one of the world's worst-ever sports stadium disasters during a football match in Indonesia.
According to reports, a five-year-old baby and two police officers were among those killed after a riot broke out during a football match between Arema and Persebaya Surabaya in the city of East Java.
Pandemonium erupted immediately after the final whistle in the 3-2 victory for Persebaya Surabaya, followed by a terrifying pitch invasion by Arema fans at the Kanjuruhan Stadium.
As the event devolved into anarchy, the fans allegedly began attacking police officers and torching cars. Following that, police officers began firing tear gas into the crowd, causing a stampede and widespread chaos. More than 300 people were rushed to nearby hospitals, but many were unable to arrive, and some died during treatment.
According to multiple reports, some players who were still on the field during the incident were not spared during what was arguably the worst stadium disaster in history. Indonesian President Joko Widodo, on the other hand, has since expressed his condolences to the victims of the tragic incident.
