TRANSFER NEWS - NEW MAN UP FRONT
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's Chelsea shirt number has been revealed, following a contentious decision
After selecting his new shirt number at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will need to break a bad streak.
At Chelsea, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has taken a risk with his shirt number choice.
The forward was announced as a Blues player after the transfer window closed after a deal with Barcelona was agreed earlier in the day, with Marcos Alonso believed to be moving in the opposite direction.
The Gabonese striker signed a two-year contract and will reunite with his former manager Thomas Tuchel, whom he worked with at Borussia Dortmund.
Aubameyang's shirt number, however, is a contentious one, as it replaces one that has a troubled history at Stamford Bridge. The 33-year-old will be the club's new No.9, replacing Romelu Lukaku, who left the club on a season-long loan earlier this summer.
Tammy Abraham was the next most successful player to wear the shirt in recent memory, despite a track record of failure for those who have worn the iconic top. Steve Sidwell, Franco Di Santo, Fernando Torres, Radamel Falcao, Alvaro Morata, and Khalid Boulahrouz are also wearing the shirt.
Aubameyang previously wore the No.9 shirt for Saint-Etienne in the 2010/11 season, as well as Dijon in 2008. During his brief spell at Barcelona, he was No.17, which is now occupied by Raheem Sterling, while at Arsenal, he was No.14, No.17 at Dortmund, and No.7 for the majority of his time at St Etienne.
Chelsea fans and Tuchel will now be hoping that he can overcome the so-called curse of success.
