A High Court in Ikeja, Lagos, has sentenced a former police officer, Olalekan Ogunyemi, to life in prison for murdering one Kolade Johnson, 35.
On March 31, 2019, Johnson was shot dead during a police raid at Onipetesi in Lagos, while watching an English Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
On Thursday, September 22, Justice Adenike Coker delivered her decision, finding the defendant guilty of the charge and sentenced him to life in prison.
The judge, however, ruled that the convict will be eligible for parole after serving at least 25 years in prison.
Despite the fact that the former police inspector was initially charged with murder, the court found him guilty of manslaughter due to his lack of intent to kill the victim.
After an orderly trial, Ogunyemi, who was assigned to the Nigeria Police Special Anti-Cultism Squad, was found guilty of murdering the victim and was dismissed from the force.
