A NIGERIA AND HIS ACCOMPLICE WERE ARRESTED FOR DUPING PEOPLE ON SOCIAL MEDIA IN INDIA
A Nigerian national and his female accomplice were apprehended in India for allegedly defrauding people after befriending them on social media.
The suspects, Akne Benjamin, 32, and Fatima Lyngdoh, 42, both from Meghalaya's Khasi Hill district, were apprehended in Delhi by Rajasthan police on Monday, September 19, 2022.
According to Mamta Gupta, Superintendent of Police, Sirohi, a complaint was received at Abu Road Sadar police station on April 24 in which a woman claimed she became friends on Facebook with a woman who told her she was from New Zealand. During interrogation, Lyngdoh admitted to dipping people in various states for crores of rupees, according to police.
According to the senior police officer, both accused used to create fake profiles of foreign nationals on social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. The accused told their targets that they had sent them expensive gifts after befriending them.
Following that, another member demanded payment from the victim, failing which the target was threatened with an investigation into the gift, according to police.
