CHELSEA COMPLETE £70M TRANSFER OF WESLEY FOFANA FROM LEICESTER CITY
Wesley Fofana moves to Chelsea, and Todd Boehly eventually acquires the £70 million star from Leicester City
Wesley Fofana will join Chelsea from Leicester City in a move that might ultimately cost more than £80 million, which would be a record price for a defender.
Wesley Fofana has been acquired by Chelsea from Leicester City, according to a statement. Football.london has learned that the contract has an initial value of £70 million but that if the add-ons are fulfilled, the final value might exceed £ 80 million.
After missing out on Jules Kounde, who signed with Barcelona, Todd Boehly opted to go all-in for the Leicester center-back, who the Blues had long been interested in. Chelsea has finally secured their guy after four offers and weeks of talks.
Now eligible for this weekend's game against West Ham United, Fofana might start right away. The Frenchman will likely play right center-back in Thomas Tuchel's 3-4-2-1 formation.
The French defender, who just committed to a seven-year deal with Chelsea, seemed happy about the change. He stated, "The last two days have been incredibly huge days for me and I'm very thrilled," in a statement to the club's official website.
"It's a dream come true for me to have trained with the team this morning. I'm incredibly eager to begin playing games for the supporters and the club. I'm here to take home trophies of all kinds, including the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup. I'm here to do what the club has been doing since it was founded, which is to win championships."
Meanwhile, Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly said: "Wesley is a hugely promising defender who has already proven his quality in the Premier League at a young age. We are delighted we were able to bring one of Europe's most exciting talents to Chelsea and further strengthen that area of our squad, both for this season and many more to come."
