THE ONTOLOGY OF PALM WINE

The art of Palm Wine drinking is a culture inhabited by millions of Nigerians. It is served in wedding ceremonies, anniversaries, carnivals, and many more.

Palm wine, known also as toddy, is an alcoholic beverage created from the sap of various species of palm tree such as the palmyra, date palms, and coconut palms. It is known by various names in different regions and is common in various parts of Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, South America, and Micronesia,

Palm wine is an African natural beer and can be taken at anytime. It is very popular among Nigerians. It also has various dialectal and tribal names such as  Mmanya ocha, Nkwu elu, Tumbo/Pammy in Igbo - with "ngwo" and "nkwu" variants. It plays a very important role in Igbo traditionally settings.

We looked at this calabash items above consisting of the Palm wine drinkers cup and truly, the first thing that crossed our mind is the Palm wine.

Palmie, as it is fondly called, is deeply rooted in some traditions in West Africa Take the Igbo culture, for example, the local beverage is part of the requirements for a lady's bride price. Their traditional marriage ceremony Igba Nkwa meaning palm wine carrying ceremony is clearly named after the drink.
