UEL: Leverkusen Go Top After Four-Goal Rout of Lech Poznan
| Schick scores brace as Bayer Leverkusen thrash Lech Poznan |
Patrik Schick scored twice from the spot as Bayer Leverkusen maintained their perfect Europa League start with a dominant 4-0 win at Lech Poznan.
Lech Poznan 0-4 Bayer Leverkusen, report, result and highlights...
Bayer Leverkusen proved far too strong for Lech Poznan as they cruised to a comprehensive victory to make it two wins from two in the Europa League.
A lengthy VAR check was needed to determine that Ibrahim Maza's shot had struck the hand of substitute Terry Yegbe, and Patrik Schick stepped up to take the resulting penalty and calmly slotted it into the bottom-right corner.
Leverkusen made it two just minutes later when Mateusz Lis saved Nathan Tella’s initial effort and Malik Tillman’s follow-up, but Tillman managed to bundle the ball in at the second attempt.
Lech had chances of their own, but they were punished again when Mateusz Skrzypczak pulled Schick down off the ball in the area, handing the Czech striker another chance from the spot, which he again placed low into the corner.
There was little sign of respite for Lech as the second half got underway, though at least their opponents began to squander chances.
Schick failed to get a clean enough connection on his header to complete his hat-trick, before Aleix Garcia and Robert Andrich forced saves from Lis.
The hosts eventually started to control possession and territory but still found themselves exposed on the counter, and Lis had to be at his best to deny Diego Moreira twice.

A deserved fourth finally arrived for the visitors late on when Moreira was played through, but this time he chose to lay the ball off for Maza, who curled past the goalkeeper to seal the win.
So much drama in the early fixtures 🥵 #UEL https://t.co/7WdheOoM9S

Leverkusen move – for the moment at least – to the top of the league phase standings, with this fifth-ever match against Polish opposition in Europe bringing a fifth win.
In contrast, never victorious against German opposition, Lech sit at the other end of the table, and with Sunderland and Benfica next up, there is little hope of a resurgence.
