AS Roma climbed to second in Serie A with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico, stretching their unbeaten home run in the Italian top flight to 16 matches (W12, D4).
After their unbeaten start to the season was brought to a dramatic end in Wednesday's Champions League defeat to Real Madrid, Gian Piero Gasperini's side knew they needed a response against struggling Genoa.
However, it was the visitors who posed the first threat, as Johan Vasquez squandered a half-chance inside the box, while at the other end Justin Bijlow comfortably kept out Matias Soule's low strike.
Roma raised their intensity after a cagey opening 30 minutes, with Leonardo Balerdi heading against the bar from close range before Bijlow stood firm to deny Rodrigo Mora.
Genoa hit the woodwork themselves just minutes later, as former Roma man Stephan El Shaarawy struck the upright from 20 yards out.
Grateful for that let-off, the Giallorossi made a dream start to the second half, with Santiago Castro brilliantly creating space for himself inside the box before lifting an audacious finish into the far corner beyond a helpless Bijlow.
Having suffered just one defeat in their last 40 Serie A home meetings with Genoa (W33, D6), Roma looked to press home their advantage heading into the final 30 minutes.
Gasperini’s men duly got their second in the 68th minute, when Emanuele Lulli found himself unmarked at the back post to tap in after excellent work from Soule in the build-up.

That all but ended the contest, with Milutin Osmajic seeing a late effort kept out by Pierluigi Gollini in the Roma goal, as the hosts cruised through the closing stages to seal a routine victory and stretch their unbeaten start to the league season to seven matches (W5, D2).
