Champions League Preview

After a dramatic Matchday 2 that delivered comebacks, thrashings and surprise results, the Champions League league phase returns with some heavyweight clashes. Holders PSG host Barcelona in a repeat of last season's classic, Bayern Munich welcome Arsenal, while English sides Liverpool, Man City, Aston Villa and Manchester United all face tricky tests across Tuesday and Wednesday.

PSG host Barcelona, Bayern face Arsenal in Champions League fixtures...

Reigning Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain welcome Barcelona in the headline match of the league phase on Tuesday.

Premier League champions Arsenal also face a major examination the next evening with a trip to Bayern Munich.

Liverpool and Aston Villa arrive for their midweek fixtures in buoyant mood after convincing wins last time out.

Manchester City will be looking for a reaction against AEK Athens following their home loss to PSG, while Manchester United aim to recover from their setback against Atletico Madrid with a visit to Como.

Spotlight on Paris: PSG host Barcelona

A 13-game unbeaten run in the Champions League a club record is within reach for PSG as they welcome Barcelona, fresh from their 4-2 victory at the Etihad last week.

All eyes will be on Ousmane Dembele, who has found the net in six straight appearances in the competition, matching a French-player record previously held by Kylian Mbappe.

Barcelona have made a prolific start, netting nine times across their first two league-phase outings, with Lamine Yamal directly involved in five of those goals with one strike and four assists.

Team news sees the visitors missing defenders Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia, while the hosts will be without injured left-back Nuno Mendes.

Anfield awaits Villarreal challenge

Liverpool scored six against LASK last week but allowed three at the other end, making the result more complicated than expected. Villarreal will pose a sterner examination than Andoni Iraola's team, who have won both of their opening Champions League fixtures.

The Yellow Submarine ended a 12-match winless streak in the competition with victory over Napoli last time out, yet they are still searching for a first-ever win against English opposition in the Champions League, having drawn six and lost ten.

At Anfield, however, Liverpool remain formidable, winning 15 of their last 16 home games in the competition and claiming victory in their last five European ties against Spanish sides, including against Atletico last month.

The two clubs last faced each other in the 2021/22 semi-finals, which Liverpool won 5-2 over two legs. Villarreal have fallen behind in both matches so far this term and will need a much faster start to have a chance on Merseyside.

City seek quick response against AEK

Manchester City have little time to dwell on their defeat to PSG as they aim to revive their Champions League campaign at home to AEK Athens.

Erling Haaland struck twice against the French champions but is a doubt after picking up a knock at the weekend, and could join Antoine Semenyo on the sidelines after the winger was ruled out for up to eight weeks.

AEK were beaten by Shakhtar Donetsk last week, and with City expected to hit back on home soil, the hosts will still be heavily fancied regardless of who is available.

United head to Italy to face Como

Manchester United followed up an emphatic 4-0 win over Sabah with a disappointing 2-0 loss to Atletico last week. Michael Carrick's men now face a trip to Como, who were edged out 3-2 by Feyenoord last time out in Europe.

Tasos Douvikas and Assane Diao have been on target in both of Como's Champions League games to date and will be two to watch.

United's away form in the competition remains a concern, with just one victory in their last 10 road trips in Europe, drawing three and losing six.

That said, the Red Devils have been beaten only twice in their last 16 encounters with Italian sides in Europe, though they will need a marked improvement on their performance in Madrid if they are to overcome a potentially awkward Como side.

Heavyweights collide in Munich

Wednesday's headline fixture sees Bayern Munich take on last season's finalists Arsenal in a meeting of two of Europe's heavyweights.

After being held by Viking, Bayern delivered the ideal response at the weekend with a 6-1 thrashing of RB Leipzig, inspired by a hat-trick from Luis Diaz.

Former Tottenham striker Harry Kane has scored 15 times in 22 appearances against Arsenal, who arrive unbeaten in their last 14 matches in the league phase.

That impressive run will be put to the test at the Allianz Arena, where Bayern are unbeaten in 39 home games in the competition, winning 37 and drawing two, since December 2013.

Bayern will be without Michael Olise, however, after the winger was dismissed for two needless yellow cards against Viking.

Villa Park test for Viking

Aston Villa have made a perfect start to their Champions League campaign with back-to-back victories, but they would be wise not to underestimate Norwegian side Viking.

Viking showed real resilience to claim a surprise 3-3 draw against Bayern Munich last time out and will need similar spirit against a Villa side closing in on becoming the second-fastest team to 20 wins in the European Cup/Champions League.

Unai Emery has made Villa Park a formidable European stronghold, with his team unbeaten in 14 matches and currently on an 11-game winning streak.

History is also against the visitors, as Norwegian clubs are winless in 28 previous trips to face English opposition, drawing two and losing 26.

Madrid in mood to punish Leipzig

Free-scoring Real Madrid are hitting form at just the right time ahead of welcoming an unpredictable RB Leipzig side.

Los Blancos backed up last week's thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over Roma with a 4-1 rout of Sevilla in LaLiga, maintaining Jose Mourinho's perfect record of six wins from six at the Bernabeu since his return.

They will fancy their chances against a Leipzig outfit that has struggled badly on the road.

Martin Demichelis' team were thrashed 6-1 by Bayern Munich at the weekend, having now conceded 15 goals across their last four away fixtures.

Results in the Champions League have been equally lean for the German side, with last week's win over PSV Eindhoven being just their second in the last 12 matches in the competition, alongside one draw and nine defeats.

Elsewhere across the league phase

The early games on Tuesday feature Fenerbahce against Slavia Prague and Sabah versus Borussia Dortmund. Later on, Roma take on Slovan Bratislava, Porto face PSV, Napoli meet Bodo/Glimt, and Stuttgart host Atletico Madrid.

Wednesday begins with Lille versus Galatasaray at 18:45, before the 21:00 slate sees Inter play Shakhtar, Club Brugge meet Lens, Real Betis face Feyenoord, and Sporting CP host LASK.
