Borussia Dortmund left it late to retake top spot in the Bundesliga as substitute Maximilian Beier's fierce 80th-minute strike sealed a hard-fought 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt and stretched their unbeaten run before the trip to Bayern.

Beier the hero as unbeaten Dortmund extend home dominance over Frankfurt...

Substitute Maximilian Beier struck a stunning winner as Borussia Dortmund moved three points clear at the summit of the Bundesliga with a 1-0 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt, stretching their winning run against them at home to six games.

Fresh from scoring twice in the midweek UEFA Champions League victory over Sabah, a confident Serhou Guirassy tried to delicately chip Noah Atubolu after racing through on goal inside the first 20 minutes, only to be denied by the goalkeeper's strong right hand to the annoyance of the home crowd.

That was one of several chances shared by both sides in an entertaining first half.

Frankfurt's Jonathan Burkardt soon fired a low drive just wide of Gregor Kobel's far post, moments before Daniel Svensson threatened at the other end with a deflected effort that looped onto the crossbar.

Moments later, Felix Nmecha almost gifted Die Adler the opener when a loose touch allowed Younes Ebnoutalib to race through one-on-one with Gregor Kobel, who bailed out his teammate with a vital save to ensure the sides went into the break level.

The hosts came within millimetres of breaking the deadlock early in the second half, when Joey Veerman's dangerous inswinging corner picked out the towering Guirassy, whose flicked header crashed against the crossbar.

Niko Kovac's side looked set for a frustrating evening until Beier produced a moment of magic in the 80th minute.

The forward collected the ball on the edge of the area from Jobe Bellingham, who had come on just seconds earlier, shifted it out of his feet and unleashed a ferocious right-footed strike beyond Atubolu's reach.

Adi Hutter's men ultimately failed to find a reply as they slipped to back-to-back defeats without scoring, leaving them 13th with just eight points.

As for title-chasing Dortmund, they will go into next weekend's Klassiker against Bayern Munich still unbeaten in the Bundesliga.
