Coco Gauff beat Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4 to reach the US Open quarter-finals for the first time since 2023. She will next play French Open champion Mirra Andreeva.

Coco Gauff is back in the US Open quarter-finals. The fourth seed got past fellow American Iva Jovic on Monday to reach the last eight for the first time since lifting the title in 2023.

Gauff took down 14th seed Jovic 6-1, 6-4 in 1 hour 20 minutes.

It was a rare all-American generational matchup: two-time Grand Slam winner Gauff, still just 22, came up against 18-year-old Jovic. The teenager was overpowered in the first set but made Gauff work in the second.

“She plays beyond her years,” Gauff said. “I'm looking to many more battles out here.”

Gauff said her serve was “really well” and described the win, plus her second-round defeat of Spain’s Paula Badosa, as her best tennis of 2026 so far.

Gauff hasn't dropped a set in New York and says a sharper serve has boosted her belief.  

“I'm able to rely on a lot of different things to win points in many different ways, and I think that gives me a confidence,” Gauff said after Monday's match.  

She was broken to start but hit back immediately, winning six games in a row to take the opener.

Some of the long rallies left Gauff gasping, but she usually came out ahead in them.  

Jovic lifted her level in the second set, coming to net off strong groundstrokes to put Gauff under pressure.

The crowd loved their net battles, and Gauff closed it out with a surprise serve-and-volley, putting away a volley Jovic couldn't return.  

Next up for Gauff is French Open champion and No.5 seed Mirra Andreeva. The American leads their head-to-head 5-0.

Even with a perfect record against Andreeva, Gauff said their matches have usually been tight. The last time they met, in the Rome quarter-finals, Gauff edged it 6-4 in the third  just weeks before Andreeva went on to win in Paris.
