Russian fifth seed Mirra Andreeva battled past Austria’s Anastasia Potapova 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 on Monday to reach her first US Open quarter-final.

The match ended on a sour note when Potapova appeared to suffer a leg injury late on, with Andreeva leading and in control of the contest.

Andreeva said after the match: “She's my good friend and seeing what a battle we had... seeing her fall like this, it's not easy. It's not the way obviously you want to finish the match... I just told her she's been playing amazing so far.”

The French Open champion will now face the winner of the all-American fourth-round match between Iva Jovic and Coco Gauff.

Potapova committed less than half the unforced errors of Andreeva in a tight opening set. The Russian fifth seed couldn’t hold on in the key moments, giving up the decisive break in the final game with two double faults and a wayward backhand.

Andreeva reset in the second set and cut down the errors. She was stronger in the short rallies, and took control after Potapova double-faulted to hand her the break in game seven.

The Russian moved ahead 2-1 in the final set with a baseline break. Potapova then went down in pain in game nine, grabbing her left knee after a chase along the baseline, and Andreeva went to support her off the court.

Potapova stayed down for several minutes while a physio taped her leg, but returned to finish. Andreeva closed it out with a backhand winner, then crossed the net to hug her opponent.

Andreeva added: “She's a better fighter than me so I'm sure she's going to come back even stronger.”
