EPL: Brighton Score Four In 23-Minute Blitz To Thrash 10-Man Aston Villa

Villa’s nightmare start continues in 4-0 defeat at Brighton...
Brighton flew out of the traps with four goals in 23 minutes to blow away 10-man Aston Villa. Jack Hinshelwood and Maxim De Cuyper were outstanding as Fabian Hürzeler finally beat the Villans at the fifth time of asking.
It’s been a difficult summer for Villa. Several key players left the Europa League winners, and many now expect a tough campaign under Unai Emery.
It was a nightmare start. Within 20 minutes Pau Torres gave the ball away cheaply to De Cuyper, whose shot hit the post and bounced in off Victor Lindelof for an own goal.
Things got worse when Rutter breezed past Villa’s defence, reached the byline and pulled it back for De Cuyper to finish.
Brighton kept pouring forward and killed the game just before the half-hour. Two goals in 60 seconds did it. The third came when De Cuyper found the back post, Gomez headed it back across, and Hinshelwood nodded in.
Hinshelwood had his second moments later. Joao Gomes was caught in possession on the edge of his own box and the Brighton midfielder made no mistake, slotting past Bizot.
Gomes’ Premier League debut for Villa turned into a nightmare. After a VAR check, he was sent off for kicking out at Rutter, capping a miserable first half for Emery’s side.
A big section of Villa’s away fans didn’t come back out after the break, but those who did gave their team full backing and hoped for an improved second half.
Brighton resumed exactly as they finished. They played through a virtually absent Villa midfield with ease.
Ayari went close from inside the box, but his shot drifted just wide. Bizot was then forced into action, stretching to push Dunk’s cross around the post after it evaded everyone in the middle.
Brighton thought they had a fifth when Kostoulas tapped in the rebound after Costinha hit the post, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Brighton cruised through the last 30 minutes. It was a perfect afternoon for Hürzeler and ideal preparation ahead of their Conference League play-off second leg vs Tromso.
Brighton have now gone six straight season openers in the PL without defeat (W5, D1). Villa, meanwhile, have won just 2 of their 8 top-flight openers since their 2019/20 return (D1, L5).
