Grand tour debutant Matt Brennan takes stage 2 at Vuelta a Espana. Pogacar eases up as Brennan seizes surprise Vuelta victory.

British youngster Matt Brennan took stage two victory at the Vuelta a Espana on Sunday, while race favourite Tadej Pogacar retained the red jersey as overall leader.  

The 21-year-old Visma-Lease a Bike rider, making his first Grand Tour appearance, powered up the uphill finish in Manosque after the 214km route from Monaco and crossed the line clear.

Pau Miquel of Bahrain Victorious finished second, with race leader Tadej Pogacar crossing the line in third.

Pogacar had won Saturday’s opening time trial by 0.09s from Britain’s Ethan Hayter, and takes a 9-second advantage over Wout van Aert into Monday’s stage three.

Hayter was in an early break and looked set to take the red jersey after winning the final intermediate sprint and picking up six bonus seconds.

But as the race hit the run-in to Manosque, the Briton was caught out of position near the back of a stretched peloton.

With about 1.5km to go it looked like a showdown between Pogacar and Van Aert for the stage, but Pogacar eased up and it was Van Aert’s Visma-Lease a Bike teammate Brennan who struck to claim the biggest win of his career.

“We thought there was a nice opportunity to attack in the final,” Brennan, who joined Visma-Lease a Bike's WorldTour squad in 2025, said. “I was super happy to finish it off.”

Brennan now sits third overall, 10 seconds adrift of race leader Pogacar.

Monday’s stage heads into the French Pyrenees, with a summit finish in Font-Romeu close to the Spanish border.
