Fils Claims Maiden Masters Title With Cincinnati Win Over Tiafoe

Arthur Fils beat Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 in Cincinnati on Sunday to claim his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title.
The 22-year-old landed the biggest title of his career and, with the US Open one week away, is set to rise from world No.21 to a career-high No.11.
Fils dominated the first set, losing only three points on serve. Tiafoe hit back as Fils struggled with errors in the second, but after a medical timeout before the decider, the American had no answer as the Frenchman stormed through the third.
“That was my dad on the phone, now I need to call my mom,” the delighted winner said at the trophy ceremony, lamenting only that his father missed one of his tournaments for the first time this year.
“Wow, that feels good, that feels good,” Fils said. “It's a lot of training, a lot of things, a lot of sacrifice.
“Injury,” added Fils, who missed much of 2025 with a back injury and months this year with a hip ailment. “To be able to win one title like this means a lot to me.”
Fils saved two match points in the final game, then set up a third with a lob before sealing victory as Tiafoe hit a forehand long to end the 98-minute final.
Fils flew out of the blocks, breaking Tiafoe to go 3-0 up and losing just one point across the first three games.
He controlled the rallies from the baseline. Even as Tiafoe found his range, he couldn't pressure Fils on serve, and Fils wrapped up the opener in 29 minutes with his eighth ace.
The second set brought Fils’ first setback. After saving three break points early, he went long on a fourth and Tiafoe raced out to 3-0.
The American took every opportunity to level the match in 54 minutes, then called for the trainer for treatment on his troublesome right hip.
Fils refocused and ran away with it, breaking Tiafoe twice to open a 4-0 lead in a blistering finish.
It was Tiafoe’s second final defeat in Cincinnati. He also lost to Jannik Sinner in 2024.
“I started the first set very, very strong,” Fils said. “In the second set I lost a bit of focus; he put me under pressure.
“But I had a small talk with myself in front of the mirror after the second set. I said, 'If you are going to lose, it cannot get worse than this. You need to fight.
“I don't have any words to describe this win,” added Fils, who admitted that the injuries slowed his rise. “There is a bit of relief.
“It was a hell of a week. We made a mistake hell of a job, and it is not done yet.”
