Dominik Szoboszlai’s stoppage-time penalty rescued a point for Arne Slot’s Liverpool in a dramatic 2-2 Premier League draw at Newcastle United. It’s the second year running the Reds have struck late at St James’ Park to flip the result.

Only four Premier League games this season have seen more goals than Newcastle vs Liverpool, and the scoring started early.  

New manager, same defensive issues for Liverpool. They were cut open by a simple counter and Anthony Elanga finished calmly to put Newcastle ahead after five minutes.

The game stayed end-to-end, and Florian Wirtz almost pulled Liverpool level. But debutant Lukas Hornicek did well to palm it around the post.

Newcastle threatened too. Yoane Wissa looked sharp and threaded a perfect ball through for William Osula, with Jeremy Jacquet stretching to clear it to safety.

Elanga threatened to break clear again early in the second half as another quick counter exposed Liverpool. Moments later, Wissa just under-hit a pass that would have sent Osula through. The visitors looked vulnerable at the back while pushing players forward.

Liverpool’s pressure eventually paid off. Cody Gakpo struck from outside the box to level, just after seeing a shot skim narrowly over.  

Liverpool’s defensive frailties were exposed again, and Newcastle retook the lead almost immediately. Joe Willock glided through the backline before placing a fine finish past Alisson Becker.

Newcastle should have made it 3-1. A dangerous cross from Lewis Hall found Wissa, but he couldn’t get a proper touch and stretched to miss.  

How The Game Swung

Wissa had another golden chance late on but Alisson stood tall to deny hp0ppay almost immediately, with Hall fouling substitute Víctor Muñoz in the box with the last kick of the game.

The late equalizer extended the Reds’ remarkable run to 14 seasons without an opening-day defeat, while new boss Arne Slot also kept alive the league’s longest managerial unbeaten streak at W8, D11.
