Criticized 12-day format hit by more weather delays in Montreal. Shelton, Jodar and Fils matches delayed by Montreal rain.

Rain and the threat of lightning washed out the first two quarter-finals at the ATP Montreal Masters on Monday evening.

The 12-day tournament, already under fire for running too long, couldn’t get the matches in. Weather delays have been a recurring issue, stretching the event to almost Grand Slam length.

Monday’s scheduled quarter-finals between Spain’s Rafael Jodar and France’s Arthur Fils, and between Italy’s Luciano Darderi and American Brandon Nakashima, have both been pushed to Tuesday.

Defending champion Ben Shelton, the US fifth seed, will take on Czechia’s Jakub Mensik on Tuesday. The other last-eight match will see Spain’s Daniel Merida face American Learner Tien.

The strangely timed Masters isn’t set to finish until Thursday’s final. That means it overlaps with the start of the Cincinnati Masters, the final big tune-up before the US Open.
