Detroit fights back from 3-1 down, sends series home

The Pistons avoided becoming the 7th No. 1 seed to lose to a bottom seed and will host Game 7 on Sunday.

Cunningham’s 32-10 leads Detroit’s historic 26-1 run vs Orlando. Detroit’s win sets up a second-round matchup with either Cleveland or Toronto if they close out the series...

Cade Cunningham powered the Detroit Pistons back from the brink, leading a comeback against the Orlando Magic on Friday to force a Game 7 in their first-round series.

Orlando held a 3-2 series lead and looked set to close it out after building a 24-point advantage in the second half. That lead vanished as their offense went cold and Detroit capitalized.

The Magic went ice-cold, missing 23 straight field goals - the longest miss streak in playoff history - and managed just 1 point over a 10-minute span.

Boos echoed through the arena as Orlando’s 71-54 lead flipped to an 80-72 Detroit advantage, thanks to a stunning 26-1 run by the Pistons.

Detroit closed it out with a 93-79 win.

“Never say die, simple as that. I mean, Detroit grit, it’s what we’ve been talking about all year,” said Cade Cunningham, who led the Pistons with 32 points and 10 rebounds.

Down 3-1 in the series, Detroit looked like it was about to become only the 7th No. 1 seed in NBA history to lose a first-round matchup to the lowest seed in the conference.

Now the Pistons get a shot to take the series back home in Detroit on Sunday. A win would send them to the Eastern Conference semifinals against either the Cavaliers or Raptors.

After a tight first quarter, Orlando went on a run to jump ahead by 17. Jalen Suggs, Desmond Bane, and Wendell Carter Jr. all hit threes within a minute to fuel the surge.

Paolo Banchero got going as well, and Orlando shot 62% in the second quarter. Their defense held Detroit to just 12 points in the frame.

Orlando pushed the lead to 24 early in the second half, but Detroit started an epic fightback right after.

The Pistons forced turnovers and won the hustle plays, while the Magic’s shooting fell apart under the pressure of trying to close out their first playoff series win since 2010.

Detroit went 60-22 in the regular season, and now they’ll be favored to win their first playoff series since 2008.

“Thank God we get to take this back to the crib. It’s gonna be loud in Detroit, and we got to finish our business,” said Cunningham, who scored 19 in the fourth quarter.
