Osaka makes history in paris with first Roland Garros last 16 after Jovic victory...

Naomi Osaka kept her Roland Garros run going as she outlasted American teen Iva Jovic 7-6(7-5), 6-7(3-7), 6-4 in the third round on Saturday.

On Court Suzanne Lenglen, the Japanese star made another bold fashion statement. She walked out in a gold jacket with a long, flowing gold train, paired with pink sneakers and a black sponsor’s visor.

She peeled off the outer layers and played in another version of her gold dress, which glimmered under the hot Paris sun as the heatwave faded.

When asked about more outfits after the match, Osaka kept it a mystery.

“I think it's a surprise every time,” she said.

The 16th seed is now on her deepest run yet at Roland Garros.

“I was a lot calmer than in my first matches,” said Osaka, a two-time Australian Open and two-time US Open champion. “In a slam the further I get the calmer I am. It such an honour to be here. It's the furthest I have ever been here.”

Next up for Osaka is either world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka or unseeded Australian Daria Kasatkina.

Serves ruled the contest, and Osaka secured the only break when it mattered most in game 10 of the decider.

Jovic, the 17th seed, started that game with a 162kph ace. But her level dropped after that - she missed twice into the net off Osaka’s return, then sent the first match point long.

The first two sets were dominated on serve, with both players trading holds until it went to tiebreaks.

Osaka took the opener in a breaker. Jovic hit back to force a decider by winning the second-set tiebreak.

“I am really glad it was working,” said Osaka about her serve against the 18-year-old American.
