Montreal advances to face the Buffalo Sabres next, after Buffalo defeated Boston in 6 games...

The Montreal Canadiens knocked the Tampa Bay Lightning out of the playoffs with a 2-1 road win in Game 7, taking the series 4-3 despite being outshot.

After a back-and-forth series between the rivals, it came down to a deciding Game 7 in Tampa to decide who moved on.

Tampa Bay held a 9-4 shot advantage in the opening period and looked likelier to score first. Montreal struck instead when Kaiden Guhle’s shot from the point was tipped in by Nick Suzuki to give the Habs the lead..

Neither team created much in the opening period, and both played the full frame at even strength without a power play. That changed in the second when each side spent time shorthanded.

Tampa Bay made their second power play count, tying the game with 6:33 remaining. Like Montreal’s opener, the goal came off a deflection. Charles D’Astous and Gage Goncalves moved the puck before D’Astous shot, and Dominic James tipped it past Jakub Dobes.

Montreal didn’t register a single shot on goal in the second period, the first time in franchise history they were shut out in a period.

The third period played out like the first, with Tampa Bay creating the better chances.

The Canadiens still found the winner. Lane Hutson’s initial attempt slid just wide, and Alex Newhook got to the loose puck first and fired from a tight angle. His backhand beat Andrei Vasilevski under the crossbar before the goalie could react.

With 8:53 left, Tampa Bay pulled the goalie and pressed for an equalizer with their season at stake. It didn’t come. Even with the extra attacker on for the final minutes, they couldn’t beat Jakub Dobes again.

Montreal finished with just 9 shots on goal, the fewest in NHL history. That broke the previous low of 11 set by the New York Islanders in Game 7 against Washington in 2015.

The Canadiens closed out the series 4-3 and will face the Buffalo Sabres next. Buffalo advanced in 6 games after beating the Boston Bruins.
