Julian Alvarez faces a decision on his future as Atletico Madrid prepare for the Champions League semi-final second leg against Arsenal.
Diego Simeone Champions League final last appearance Atletico...
For Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez, Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final at Arsenal carries more than a shot at the Budapest final at the end of May.
The Argentine forward has been linked to Arsenal and Spanish champions Barcelona, and there have been moments where he’s looked unsettled in the Spanish capital.
Diego Simeone and Atletico need a win over Mikel Arteta’s Premier League leaders in London to convince Alvarez he can fulfill his ambitions at the club.
Alvarez fueled the speculation himself in March, saying “Maybe yes, maybe no, you never know” when asked about staying at Atletico next season.
He later played down the talk, saying he wants to focus on Atletico’s chance at silverware this year and leave his future for later, at least publicly.

Alvarez Faces a Career Crossroads
At 26, Alvarez is reaching a stage where his personal ambitions are likely to play a bigger role in shaping his next steps than they have before.
He’s already won the Premier League twice and the Champions League with Manchester City, plus the World Cup with Argentina, so he knows what success feels like.
Since moving to Atletico in 2024, his closest shot at silverware came in April, when Real Sociedad beat Atletico on penalties in the Copa del Rey final.
Alvarez missed his kick in the shootout, deepening the disappointment, and it wasn’t the first time he’s struggled from the spot.
Atletico’s European run ended in the last 16 against Real Madrid last year after Alvarez’s penalty was ruled out for a controversial double touch.
“I try not to pay too much attention to (rumours) because something new comes out every week, new information, and I don't waste my energy on that,” Alvarez said before the 1-1 first leg draw against Arsenal last week.
“Instead, I try to focus on what we're doing. It's the most important time of the season, and I want to be in good shape so I can help the team and do great things here.”
Simeone called Alvarez the team’s most crucial player earlier this season and stood by him through a dip in form.
Alvarez answered with 10 goals in his last 18 games, including a strike against Arsenal.
Atletico head to the Emirates without any sense of inferiority. Neither side has won the Champions League, making them two of the biggest clubs still chasing their first title.
Simeone’s team, led by Alvarez and French veteran Antoine Griezmann, who is in his final weeks before a move to MLS side Orlando City, controlled last week’s match at the Metropolitano.
Arsenal were frustrated by a penalty decision that VAR overturned, but David Raya ended up busier in goal than Atletico’s Jan Oblak.

Alvarez Weighs What Comes Next
At 26, Alvarez is at a point where career goals will likely play a bigger role in his choices than they have before.
Having won the Premier League twice and the Champions League with Manchester City, and lifted the World Cup with Argentina, he’s grown accustomed to success.
Since moving to Atletico in 2024, his closest shot at a trophy was April’s Copa del Rey final, which ended in a penalty loss to Real Sociedad.
Alvarez missed his kick in the shootout, adding to the frustration, and it wasn’t the first time he’s struggled from the spot.
Atletico’s Champions League run last season stopped in the last 16 against Real Madrid after Alvarez’s penalty was ruled out for a double touch.
.Alvarez converted his penalty cleanly against Arsenal in Madrid last week, beating David Raya with a strike that leveled the game after Viktor Gyokeres had scored from the spot.
The forward came off with what Spanish outlets called a minor ankle sprain, but he’s expected to start the second leg for Atletico.
Simeone made wholesale changes to the lineup for the LaLiga win at Valencia over the weekend, sending a fresh, rested squad to London as they aim to reach the Champions League final for the first time in 10 years.
Atletico are desperate to win the trophy for the first time, and doing so would also make the case to Alvarez that he can achieve his ambitions without leaving the club.
