Como’s Champions league bid falters in defeat at Sassuolo. Paz header not enough as Como lose ground in top-four race...
Sassuolo secured their first-ever home win over Como, prevailing 2-1 to hand Cesc Fàbregas’ side back-to-back defeats for the first time since December.
The visitors were clearly the only team with something still at stake this season, as the European hopefuls dominated possession in the first half while Sassuolo were content to sit deep and absorb pressure.
Como had suffered their first loss in almost two months last week when they let a two-goal lead slip at home to leaders Inter, and with half-time approaching they were still being kept at bay by the Neroverdi. Their lack of cutting edge proved costly as Sassuolo punished them with two goals in two minutes.
Fabio Grosso’s side broke from their own half with a direct ball upfield that found M’Bala Nzola in space, and his through pass released Cristian Volpato, who lifted a first-time finish over the stranded Jean Butez to put the hosts ahead.
Just two minutes later they doubled the lead, with Nzola turning from provider to scorer as he slotted past Butez inside the box for his first goal since November.
In stoppage time, however, the Lariani cut the deficit when Nico Paz’s looping header found the top left corner to set up an intriguing second half.
Despite being pegged back, the Neroverdi would have been confident going into the second half - they’re the only Serie A side to have won every match they’ve led at the break this season.
Butez stayed alert to deny Volpato as the hour approached, with Sassuolo pushing to extend their lead.

With just over 20 minutes left, Paz came agonisingly close to a second and an equaliser when his lifted effort from close range floated over Stefano Turati, but the keeper recovered in time to keep the ball from crossing the line.
Despite keeping the lion’s share of possession, Como never looked like finding a second as they slipped to their first away defeat since December.
Sassuolo have now won four of their last five at home, continuing an impressive first season back in the top flight. The result lifts them two places to ninth and back into the top half, while a frustrated Como stay fifth and could see the gap to the top four stretch to five points by the end of the gameweek.
