USWNT Wins Record 8th SheBelieves Cup Title
The Americans finish the tournament unbeaten, defeating Colombia in the final match, thanks to Alyssa Thompson's late goal. Alyssa Thompson's 82nd-minute goal secures a 1-0 win over Colombia, capping a perfect tournament for Emma Hayes' side.
“I've coached enough teams to know that that is golden, and this team is together...”
Alyssa Thompson scored a 82nd-minute stunner as the United States edged Colombia 1-0 to win the SheBelieves Cup, capping a perfect tournament for the Americans. The Chelsea forward's superb strike, a beautifully curled shot into the top corner, was the difference at New Jersey's Red Bull Arena, where the US had dominated proceedings.
The win gives the US a flawless SheBelieves Cup campaign.
Thompson's long-range strike finally breached Colombia's stubborn defense, ending a frustrating spell for the US women who had struggled to break down their opponents' deep-lying block. The goal was a highlight for Emma Hayes, whose side will be looking strong at next year's World Cup.
Hayes was thrilled with the win, and rightly so - Thompson's goal was a beauty.
“Everyone in world football is quite compact and well coached now, and sometimes you're going to need something from deeper areas when you can't break blocks,” Hayes said.
“It was a wonderful finish from her and one I think we deserved based on the second half.”
The USWNT wrapped up the SheBelieves Cup in style, finishing the tournament with a flawless 3-0 record and nine points from nine. Earlier wins over Argentina and Canada set them up for the Colombia victory.
The win marks a successful start to Hayes' World Cup prep, with the tournament serving as a key test ahead of next year's big event.
Emma Hayes, the English football legend, is hitting the ground running as USWNT coach, taking the team to the top of their game after a rocky 2023 World Cup exit. Her Olympic gold medal win in Paris was a strong start, and now she's gunning for the World Cup title in Brazil next year.
Hayes is pleased with the team's SheBelieves Cup form, seeing it as a positive sign ahead of the big tournament. “The performances augur well for the squad's development,” she said.
“I think we've shown how to win when we're not at our best, I think we've shown versatility, I think we've shown depth and I think we've shown maturity,“ Hayes said.
“As a coach, I'm happy about those things... even when we're not at our best, we still have a belief and a trust that we can keep improving and we'll find a way.
“I've coached enough teams to know that that is golden, and this team is together, but also enjoying themselves and committed to the process of improving.”
