FA suspends Man Utd's Fletcher for “aggravated breach” of misconduct rules...
Manchester United's Jack Fletcher has apologized for using a homophobic slur during a youth-team match last year. The 18-year-old midfielder, son of former United player Darren Fletcher, was playing for the club's Under-21 side against Barnsley in the EFL Trophy in October when he allegedly called an opponent “gay boy.”
Fletcher has been handed a six-game suspension and a £1,500 fine by the England Football Association (FA) for his actions. "I am truly sorry for the offensive word that I used in the heat of the moment,” Fletcher said in a statement. “I want to be clear that this momentary lapse of character absolutely does not reflect my beliefs or values.”
As part of his punishment, Fletcher will continue participating in Academy diversity and inclusion programs and undergo educational training through the FA. Manchester United has also worked with Fletcher to strengthen his understanding of discriminatory language and its harmful effects.
The FA has suspended 18-year-old Fletcher for six matches and fined him £1,500 for misconduct, deeming his offence an “aggravated breach.” Fletcher admitted to the charge.
“I am truly sorry for the offensive word that I used in the heat of the moment,” Fletcher said in a statement.
“Despite the fact that I had no intention to use the term as a homophobic insult, I completely understand that such language is unacceptable and immediately apologised after the game.
"I want to be clear that this momentary lapse of character absolutely does not reflect my beliefs or values.”
Fletcher will keep taking part in United's diversity and inclusion programmes and get extra training from the FA on the side. The 18-year-old made his Premier League debut for United in December against Aston Villa and has made three sub appearances this season.
