Italy shocks USA with 8-6 win at World Baseball Classic, securing their biggest victory ever.

Italy makes history with stunning 8-6 win over USA at World Baseball Classic...

The U.S. team's fate hangs in the balance after completing their Pool games. Their advancement to the next round depends on Mexico's performance against Italy today. If Mexico beats Italy, the U.S. will be officially knocked out of the tournament. However, if Mexico wins with a score of 5 or more runs, the U.S. will advance based on runs allowed totals.

A win for Mexico would also mean a historic moment for Italy, as it would be their biggest win ever. The pressure is on Mexico to secure a win and potentially change the course of the tournament.

Italy pulled off a massive upset at the 2026 World Baseball Classic, defeating the heavily favored USA team 8-6. The Italians dominated early, jumping out to an 8-0 lead before the Americans mounted a late rally, scoring six runs in the final four innings.

Jac Caglianone and Kyle Teel led the Italian offense, each recording two hits. Michael Lorenzen was brilliant on the mound, tossing 4 2/3 scoreless innings to set the tone for Italy's victory. The win puts Italy in a strong position to advance to the quarterfinals, while Team USA's fate hangs in the balance, dependent on the outcome of Italy's game against Mexico.

Italy Unleashes Early

Italy broke through in the second inning, scoring three runs to take an early lead. Kyle Teel got things started with a solo home run, and Sam Antonacci followed up with a two-run shot after Jac Caglianone reached base on a hit-by-pitch. The USA struggled to respond, and Italy's momentum continued to build from there.

Italy capitalized on the USA's struggles, extending their lead in the top of the fourth. The Italians added to their 3-0 advantage, making it even tougher for the Americans to mount a comeback. The USA continued to struggle, failing to score in the bottom of the third, and Italy's momentum kept building.

The U.S. brought in Ryan Yarbrough to replace starter Nolan McLean, but the change didn't bring much luck. Yarbrough, a last-minute replacement for All-Star Joe Ryan, walked Kyle Teel, and then Jac Caglianone crushed another home run, extending Italy's lead to 5-0.

Italy made their first pitching change, replacing Michael Lorenzen with a new arm in the bottom of the fifth. Lorenzen had done his job, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings with just two hits and one walk allowed, along with two strikeouts. The veteran MLB pitcher left the game with Italy up 5-0.

Dan Altavilla came on in relief and struck out Pete Crow-Armstrong, keeping Italy's shutout intact. Meanwhile, the USA made another pitching change, bringing in Brad Keller for Ryan Yarbrough. Italy seized the opportunity, scoring more runs to extend their lead.

Brad Keller's struggles continued, walking Jac Caglianone and putting runners on first and second with one out. Sam Antonacci capitalized with a fielder's choice, scoring J.J. D'Orazio and making it 6-0 Italy. Dante Nori added to the damage with a sac-fly, pushing the lead to 7-0. Keller's woes worsened with a wild pitch, allowing Sam Antonacci to score and make it 8-0 Italy.

After enduring a three-run top-half of the sixth inning, the Americans would finally begin to show some life.

In who is their hottest bat, Gunnar Henderson launched a solo home run to deep right field to cut the lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the sixth off Altavilla.

The Italian reliever's night would end shortly after getting Aaron Judge out, right after as Joe La Sorsa entered the game.

After La Sora gave up a single to veteran MLB All-Star Paul Goldschmidt, Italy made another pitching change, bringing in Alek Jacob...and that's when the Americans began to rally.

Brice Turang would hit a double that would put him and Goldschmidt on second and third with two outs.

Then, Crow-Armstrong would launch his first home run of the World Baseball Classic to slash the lead in half 8-4 in the bottom of the seventh.

Italy threatened in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with one out, but David Bednar snatched the save, getting a strikeout and a groundout to escape the jam.

The Americans countered in the bottom of the eighth, getting on with two outs. Roman Anthony hit an RBI single, putting runners on the corners and making it 8-5, with Bryce Harper as the tying run up to bat.

Ron Marinaccio ended the threat, getting Bryce Harper to fly out to left-center, stopping the American rally. Mason Miller shut down Italy in the top of the ninth, setting up a thrilling final frame. Pete Crow-Armstrong struck again, launching his second home run of the game with one out, cutting Italy's lead to 8-6 and keeping the American hopes alive.

Bobby Witt Jr. singled with one out, putting the tying run on base. Greg Weissert came on in relief, striking out Gunnar Henderson, and leaving Aaron Judge with the weight of the game. Weissert got ahead 0-2, but Judge fought back, taking ball one on a squeeze. The final pitch was a swing-and-a-miss, ending the game and securing Italy's historic 8-6 win.
