Espanyol, on the other hand, is struggling, winless in their last six LaLiga matches. Villarreal's recent struggles, including three straight league losses and eliminations from the Copa Del Rey and Champions League, are now a distant memory as they focus on their LaLiga push.
Villarreal started strong, with Tajon Buchanan and Georges Mikautadze going wide in the opening 10 minutes. Espanyol, struggling with a poor run of form, barely threatened before halftime – their only attempt was a wild shot from Tyrhys Dolan.
Villarreal finally broke the deadlock after 30 minutes, and it was a beauty! Georges Mikautadze acrobatically volleyed Tajon Buchanan's cushioned header into the top corner, an impressive finish.
Villarreal made it 2-0 by halftime, with a bit of luck, Jose Salinas turned a cross into his own net. This sparked a dominant second-half performance, with Nicolas Pepe scoring a brilliant third goal, beating Clemens Riedel and burying it in the corner.
The game was all but over then, and Alberto Moleiro added a fourth for Villarreal, curling it past Marko Dmitrovic. Espanyol's misery was compounded by a 4-1 defeat, with their winless streak stretching to six games.
The two quick goals effectively ended the contest, with Villarreal cruising for the rest of the match. Espanyol managed a late consolation through Leandro Cabrera's header, but it was too little, too late.
