India's Arshdeep Singh looks to continue his impressive T20 World Cup form against West Indies, as the teams clash for a semi-final spot.
“We have been doing well for the past couple of years, so even after a blip or a defeat...”
India is heading into their crucial match against West Indies with renewed confidence, thanks to their “fearless” brand of cricket that led to a 72-run thrashing of Zimbabwe in Chennai. This impressive win has revived their T20 World Cup campaign, putting them back in contention for the last semi-final spot.
The Indian team, hot favorites to defend their title on home soil, bounced back strongly from their heavy defeat against South Africa in their Super Eights opener. Their aggressive batting, led by Abhishek Sharma's blistering 55 and Hardik Pandya's unbeaten 50, piled up 256 for four, the second-highest total in the tournament's history.
India's batting was on fire, scoring 256-4 with Abhishek Sharma's blistering 55 and Hardik Pandya's unbeaten 50.
The Indian batters demolished the opposition bowling, hitting 17 sixes and 17 fours at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
India takes on West Indies in Kolkata on Sunday to decide the second semi-finalist from Group 1, with the Windies coming off a 9-wicket loss to South Africa.
“We want to play the fearless cricket, the brand of cricket we played today and we played since last year,” batter Tilak Varma said.
“The same intent we want to keep in the next game as well. And going ahead in the tournament, we take the same intensity (forward).”
Varma contributed 44 off 19 balls, sharing an unbeaten 84-run stand with Pandya, who hit two sixes to complete his fifty.
India's innings clicked after they changed their opening combo, bringing back Sanju Samson, who got them off to a quick start with 24 off 15.
Abhishek Sharma turned his tournament around, hitting his first T20 World Cup fifty after struggling with three ducks in four innings.
“It's important when the openers give us a good start, the same confidence follows to number three, four and five,” said Varma.
“And we discussed that whatever the situation is, (even) if we lose three-four wickets in powerplay, we will bat with the same rhythm,” he added.
“And we want to show the fear in opposition bowlers, that these guys are ready to hit each and every ball.”
Intensity is Key
India, the top-ranked T20 team, had been expected to score big in the World Cup, but their batting struggled initially, looking fragile against teams like the US.
Varma is keeping things level-headed, aware that his team still has work to do against West Indies, who showed their strength with 254-6 against Zimbabwe.
“So if the wicket is not good, then we'll adjust, and we'll keep that intensity on,” said Varma.
“I would not say we want to score more than 250 - but if we get a good start, then of course we'll go for it.”
India's bowling has been impressive, and Arshdeep Singh's performance against Zimbabwe was standout. He took 3 wickets for 24 runs, helping restrict Zimbabwe to 184-6. This feat also made him India's leading wicker-taker in the T20 World Cup, surpassing Jasprit Bumrah's 33 wickets with 35 wickets under his belt.
It's going down to the wire in Group 1 of the Super 8! 👏

Arshdeep's success is a boost for India's campaign, and his ability to adapt to conditions has been key. With the team relying on strong bowling and batting, Arshdeep's form is a positive sign.
“We have been doing well for the past couple of years, so even after a blip or a defeat, the belief of the group was there,” Arshdeep told reporters.
“We knew we just have to come and follow our processes, and the result will come our way. So the thought was very simple and we are enjoying it.”
The 2024 champions face a tough task, trying to make history as the first team to retain the T20 World Cup title, and also become the first to win it on home soil.
