Former Real Madrid and Feyenoord winger Royston Drenthe has been rushed to the hospital after suffering a brain stroke, according to an announcement by FC De Rebellen, a group of former Dutch and Belgian footballers. Drenthe, 38, had the stroke on Friday and is currently receiving medical attention.
The group confirmed that Drenthe is in good hands and receiving excellent care. His family and team are hopeful for a speedy recovery. In a statement, they requested peace and privacy to allow Drenthe to focus on his recovery. Drenthe retired from football in 2023, with a career spanning notable clubs like Everton, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday.
“The team and everyone involved hope for a speedy recovery. Royston's family asks for peace and privacy during this period so they can offer him the necessary support and space for his recovery,” the post added.
Drenthe, who hung up his boots in 2023, also had stints in England with Everton, Reading, and Sheffield Wednesday.
A player who previously featured for Everton, Reading, and Sheffield Wednesday, Drenthe retired from football in 2023.
