Xabi Alonso Keeps Options Open as Real Madrid Speculation Continues

Xabi Alonso keeps his future plans private amid Real Madrid links, but remains committed to guiding Leverkusen through the rest of the season.

Bayer Leverkusen's manager Xabi Alonso declined to comment on speculation linking him to the Real Madrid job, saying he has “nothing new to say” about his future. Spanish media have reported Alonso as a top contender to replace Carlo Ancelotti, who may leave Real Madrid despite having a year left on his contract following a disappointing season.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, who previously played under Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, remained tight-lipped about his future, saying, “My future? Nothing new to say, the answer remains the same. We have to wait.” He added that communication with the club is still good, stating, “Communication with the club is still good. There is clarity between everyone.”

Xabi Alonso's success in guiding Leverkusen to a historic unbeaten Bundesliga season and German Cup win made him a sought-after manager. Despite Leverkusen's title challenge faltering this season, Alonso aims to end the campaign on a high note, with the team still competing in the Europa League.

Xabi Alonso remains focused on ending the season strongly, saying, “It's still the second-best season in the club's history and we want to continue pursuing this goal.” Leverkusen's next challenge is against fourth-placed Freiburg, who are battling for a Champions League spot.

“They have that chance and they will certainly be extra motivated. But that's not a problem for us because it also motivates us a lot when we know that the opposing team is determined to beat us,” Alonso said.

“This battle is very exciting to watch at the moment. In the remaining three games, we only have Freiburg, (Borussia) Dortmund and Mainz as opponents who are fighting for European spots. They will be intense games for us again.”

Leverkusen may be without Nigerian forward Victor Boniface, who has scored 11 goals this season, due to a thigh muscle issue. Alonso said, “He felt something in his thigh muscles yesterday and didn't train today. We'll see if he's available for Sunday.”
