The Carolina Hurricanes pulled off a stunning 2-1 overtime victory over the Washington Capitals, taking the lead in their Stanley Cup playoff series.

The two teams had previously met four times during the regular season, splitting the matches with each team winning at home. In their most recent encounter a month ago, the Capitals edged the Hurricanes 5-4 in overtime.

The trend of home team wins was broken in Tuesday's matchup. Nonetheless, the home team initially took control, scoring midway through the second period.

Alexei Protas sparked the scoring play after a board battle, gaining possession and sprinting down the ice. He skillfully beat Frederik Andersen with a shot from inside the blue line to put Washington ahead 1-0.

The Carolina Hurricanes tied the game at the midway point of the third period after Jesperi Kotkaniemi intercepted a puck from Alexander Alexeyev and quickly passed it to Logan Stankoven, who scored from close range.

The game-winning goal came three minutes into overtime when Jordan Martinook shot towards the goal, and Jaccob Slavin deflected it past Logan Thompson, giving the Hurricanes a thrilling 2-1 win. The Washington Capitals, who swept their home games in the first round, now trail in the series.

In another exciting matchup, the Edmonton Oilers staged a remarkable comeback, overcoming a two-goal deficit to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 and start their second-round series on a high note.
