Postecoglou Slams VAR Delay Over Bergvall Disallowed Goal

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou expresses frustration with VAR delay over disallowed Lucas Bergvall goal in 3-1 win over Southampton.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou was visibly frustrated despite his team's 3-1 Premier League win over Southampton on Sunday. The controversy centered around a disputed goal from Lucas Bergvall, which was disallowed for offside after a lengthy VAR review lasting four minutes and fifty seconds. Bergvall thought he had doubled Tottenham's lead from a set-piece in the 33rd minute, but the VAR decision ultimately ruled out the effort.

Postecoglou's frustration was evident as he gestured to the perceived arbitrariness of the decision, playfully flipping an imaginary coin and playing rock-paper-scissors. This lighthearted yet pointed gesture seemed to suggest that the outcome was more a matter of luck than a clear-cut call. In a post-match interview, Postecoglou expressed his incredulity at the time spent on the VAR review, stating, “If you told me a few years ago that we would be spending five minutes during a football game standing around I would never have believed you.” This comment underscored his frustration with the increasing role of VAR in the game and the impact it has on the flow and excitement of matches.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou expressed his concerns about the current state of offside decisions in football. He believes that these calls should be made quickly and decisively, rather than being subject to lengthy VAR reviews. “I just can't believe that this is what we brought it in for, to stand around for five minutes for something that in the end is still, in my view anyway, inconclusive,” Postecoglou said, highlighting his frustration with the process.

Premier League's Introduction of Semi-Automated Offside Technology
The Premier League is set to introduce semi-automated offside technology later this month, following successful testing in the FA Cup. This development aims to improve the accuracy and speed of offside decisions. Postecoglou's comments come as the league seeks to refine its VAR processes, with the manager advocating for more instantaneous decision-making to maintain the flow of the game.

“They draw those lines (to check for offside) - is anyone convinced by those? This is not a slight on anyone... but the fact we're waiting five minutes, I really don't think that's what technology was brought in for.

“I think it's gone too far down the road for anyone to claw it back. We used to allow the assistants to make those decisions and we all accepted it.”
