Perfect Fit: Why Newcastle United Needs Bryan Mbeumo
Newcastle United could be the perfect destination for Bryan Mbeumo, providing a great fit for their counter-attacking style and need for a prolific goalscorer.
Brentford snapped an eight-match winless streak at home with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Brighton. Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa combined for three goals, taking their season totals to 18 and 16, respectively.
Brentford's win marked a turnaround in form, following an eight-match unbeaten start to the season (7W-1D-0L). Mbeumo and Wissa's prolific scoring has made them the Premier League's only duo with over a dozen goals each.
Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring for Brentford after just nine minutes, and the Bees dominated the first half. However, Danny Welbeck headed home just before halftime to level the score at 1-1, sending the teams into the break on equal terms.
The second half saw Brentford regain their lead when Mbeumo scored again three minutes in. Yoane Wissa further extended the lead in the 58th minute. Brighton’s fortunes worsened when Joao Pedro was sent off for kicking Nathan Collins three minutes later.
Despite Brighton’s efforts, they couldn’t prevent the loss. Kaoru Mitoma scored in the 81st minute to keep Brighton’s hopes alive, but Christian Norgaard sealed the win with a corner kick goal in the 94th minute. The victory moved Brentford to 11th in the table with 46 points, while Brighton remained 10th with 48 points, drifting further from European contention.

Bryan Mbeumo would be a strong contender for the Premier League Best XI if not for Mohamed Salah's dominance. Liverpool, who were previously linked with Mbeumo, seem less likely to pursue him now that Salah has signed a new two-year deal. Arsenal was also rumored to be interested in January, but the similarity in playing styles between Mbeumo and Bukayo Saka might reduce the likelihood.
Chelsea's current focus on younger prospects with untapped potential makes them a less likely destination for the prime-age star. Newcastle United, however, presents an intriguing opportunity. With potential Champions League qualification on the horizon, they would have the financial resources (pending Profitability and Sustainability Rules) to make a move. Under Eddie Howe, Newcastle needs a second prolific goalscorer to partner Alexander Isak.
Mbeumo's ability to finish chances would complement their talented counter-attacking side, which features Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy on the wings. Both players often defer to others in the final third, whereas Mbeumo's clinical approach would be a valuable asset.
