UCL: Leverkusen Suffer Third Consecutive Defeat as Bayern Advance

Bayern Munich comfortably defeated Leverkusen to reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, where they'll face Inter, while Leverkusen's focus shifts to the DFB-Pokal.

Bayern Munich secured a spot in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Quarter-Finals for the 35th time, dominating Bayer Leverekusen 2-0 and winning the tie 5-0 on aggregate, led by Harry Kane.

In their fifth and final head-to-head meeting this season, Leverkusen faced an uphill battle, needing to achieve a rare feat: becoming only the fifth team in UCL history to overcome a three-goal deficit from the first leg of a knockout tie.

Bayern Munich started strong, with Harry Kane nearly scoring within five minutes. Jamal Musiala's quick moves on the right flank created an opportunity, but Kane was impeded by Jonathan Tah, and Lukas Hradecky managed to palm the ball away from the goal line.

Vincent Kompany's Leverkusen side continued to struggle, and Bayern Munich went close to scoring again around the 15-minute mark, twice threatening the Leverkusen goal.

Kane initiated the scoring attempts with a shot from distance that was saved, followed by Michael Olise's effort that flashed inches wide from outside the box.

It wasn't until the 37th minute that the hosts came close to scoring, with Patrik Schick heading narrowly wide from Granit Xhaka's cross. As half-time approached, Schick's header into the side netting kept Bayern's substantial aggregate lead intact.

Tensions ran high in the BayArena with only 45 minutes left for Leverkusen to salvage their European campaign. Xabi Alonso was booked within two minutes of the restart, setting the tone for a intense second half.

The decisive moment came in the 52nd minute when Patrik Schick's miskicked clearance from Joshua Kimmich's cross fell to Harry Kane, who tapped in his 10th UCL goal this season. This achievement made Kane the first English player to score 10 goals in a European Cup/UCL campaign.

Coman nearly doubled Bayern's lead just before the hour mark, but his effort was saved by Hradecky at the near post. With the tie essentially over, Leverkusen played for pride, and both Jeremie Frimpong and Schick came close to levelling, but were denied by UCL debutant Jonas Urbig.

The match was sealed when Kane delivered a ball into the box, and Alphonso Davies slid in to score, culminating a swift move that ended the contest.

Bayern Munich ultimately cruised through both legs with ease, handing Leverkusen their third consecutive defeat for the first time since August 2022. Notably, this marked the first time Xabi Alonso has experienced such a streak as Leverkusen's manager.

Bayern Munich's reward for their dominant performance is a quarter-final showdown with Inter, led by Simone Inzaghi, next month. Meanwhile, Vincent Kompany's side will focus on their DFB-Pokal campaign as their most viable chance for silverware, given their eight-point deficit behind league leaders Bayern.
