Amorim: Manchester United Must Learn from Past Recruitment Mistakes

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says the club must avoid repeating past recruitment mistakes to achieve success.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has emphasized the importance of avoiding costly recruitment mistakes in order to halt the club's decline. Amorim, who took charge in November, has struggled to turn around United's dismal season, with the team currently sitting 15th in the Premier League. Despite investing over £600 million in new players over the past two years under his predecessor Erik ten Hag, the Red Devils have failed to show significant improvement.

Amorim's own transfer dealings have been limited, with Danish defender Patrick Dorgu being his only signing in the January transfer window. The club's reduced budget has forced Amorim to be frugal, with the team's financial constraints reflected in the announcement of up to 200 redundancies as part of a “transformation plan” to improve stability. Amorim acknowledged that those losing their jobs have paid the price for the club's lack of on-field success in recent years.

According to Amorim, poor recruitment has been at the heart of Manchester United's problems. “It's easy for me to be here and say all the pretty stuff - we have to improve,” he said. “The recruitment I think is crucial, we need to improve the team. We need to perform better, we need to be in Europe and not in our position during the season.” Amorim recognizes that he must now deliver results and convince both supporters and colleagues that he can turn United's fortunes around.

Amorim is aware that actions speak louder than words, and he faces a significant challenge in restoring Manchester United to its former glory. With the club's reputation and finances on the line, Amorim must make shrewd recruitment decisions and inspire his team to perform at a higher level. Only time will tell if he can succeed where others have failed and lead United back to the top of English football.

Ruben Amorim has acknowledged that the staff and fans of Manchester United are paying the price for the team's lack of success. “They are paying the price for our lack of success and I cannot say anything now that is going to convince the fans and all the staff that we are going to do it,” he added. Amorim recognizes that actions speak louder than words and that he needs to deliver results to restore faith in the team.

Amorim has identified recruitment as a key area for improvement, stating that the team needs to “recruit better and don't make a lot of mistakes in that department.” The £100 million spent on strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee is a prime example of where United have failed to get value for money. Hojlund has only scored twice in the Premier League this season, with his last goal coming against Viktoria Plzen on December 12.

Despite Hojlund's struggles, Amorim believes that the Danish international has a lot of potential and needs to be provided with better service. “I think it's clear, we as a team, we are not helping Rasmus,” said Amorim. “We don't create a lot of chances. I think Rasmus has a lot of potential. If we improve the way we play the game, he will have more opportunities to score.” Amorim also acknowledged that Hojlund's youth and inexperience may be contributing factors to his struggles.

Amorim is confident that Hojlund will come good if the team can improve its overall performance. “He came here very young and, when you are very young, to be the number nine and play all the time sometimes is hard,” said Amorim. “He has the ability, he already showed that here, but I think it's more a team thing than a Rasmus thing.” By shifting the focus to the team's performance, Amorim is emphasizing the need for a collective improvement rather than placing the blame solely on Hojlund's shoulders.

According to Amorim, one key area for improvement is recruitment. “We have an idea. For me as a coach, we need to be a better team and to recruit better and don't make a lot of mistakes in that department,” he said.
