Fire Engulfs Yobe Market: Over 50 Shops Destroyed

A devastating fire has swept through a popular market in Yobe, Nigeria, leaving over 50 shops in ruins.

A massive fire outbreak at the Bayan Tasha market in Damaturu, Yobe state, has resulted in the destruction of over 50 shops, with goods valued at millions of Naira. The devastating incident occurred on Tuesday, December 3, at approximately 7 a.m.

According to Ibrahim Adam, Chairman of the Traders Association, the fire was caused by a high voltage electrical surge. The blaze ravaged shops containing a variety of goods, including fabrics, used clothing, shoes, provisions, and other essential items.

A state fire service official, who preferred to remain anonymous, reported that the fire was brought under control after a distress call was received. Fire service personnel swiftly intervened, successfully preventing the fire from spreading to nearby residential areas and mitigating further damage.

In a disturbingly familiar incident, a fire broke out at the same Bayan Tasha market in Damaturu, Yobe state, just last year. Specifically, the incident occurred on Saturday, June 10, 2023.

The 2023 fire started around 1 a.m. and raged on for several hours, with firefighters struggling to bring it under control until 4 a.m. The blaze resulted in the destruction of several goods and properties, causing significant losses for the affected traders.
