Onyeka Onwenu's children share heartfelt tributes to their mother, a legendary singer and actress, who passed away at 72 after a sudden illness following a performance at a birthday party in Lagos.

The children of the late Nigerian music legend and actress, Onyeka Onwenu, Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende, have opened up about their mother's last days, sharing intimate details about her final moments before her passing.

“It is with heavy hearts that I and my brother wish to announce the passing of our mother, the much loved Onyeka Onwenu.

“She passed away last night, Tuesday, July 30, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria.

“She was rushed to the hospital after an amazing last performance, where doctors made every effort to save her life... sadly she passed.”

According to her children, Onyeka Onwenu was a trailblazing icon and legend whose remarkable impact spanned multiple generations through her soulful music, captivating acting, tireless philanthropy, and selfless humanitarian work, leaving a lasting legacy.

“She is greatly loved and missed!” they added.

The family expressed their gratitude to those who supported Onyeka in her final moments, including “Mr. Peter Obi, Mr and Mrs John Momoh and Mr and Mrs. Okonkwo as well as Messrs Ajayi and Mr Okpara all of whom were with her during her last moments. Governor Alex Otti joined to condole us soon after her passage.

“We are also appreciative of Reddington Hospital and all their staff for their efforts.

“As we take the time to make the necessary plans, we would like you all to take the time to remember her life, the contributions she made and the impact she made on so many lives, including ours,” they added.

Prior to her passing, Onyeka Onwenu had just finished performing at the birthday celebration of businesswoman Stella Okoli when she was unexpectedly taken to Reddington Hospital in Lagos.

The legendary singer and actress was 72 years old when she passed away, leaving behind a legacy of music, film, and philanthropy that will be deeply missed.
