In an attempt to sabotage the impending presidential elections, President Vladimir Putin stated on Wednesday that Ukraine was intensifying its attacks on Russian territory.

This week has seen some of the biggest strikes on Russian territory since Moscow dispatched troops into Ukraine over two years ago.

Drone assaults have targeted many oil refineries, and pro-Kyiv volunteer warriors including Russian opponents of the Kremlin claimed on Tuesday to have launched a daring offensive that was ultimately put down, infiltrating the border districts of Kursk and Belgorod.

In an interview, some of which were made public on Wednesday, Putin was asked about the assaults.

He said: “It's simple. This is all happening against the backdrop of failures on the frontline. They did not achieve any of the goals that they set for themselves last year.”

He was cited as adding, “I have no doubt that the main goal is, if not to disrupt the presidential elections in Russia, then to somehow interfere with the normal process,” by Rossia 1 television and the Ria-Novosti news agency.

President Vladimir Putin, who has ruled Russia since the turn of the century, is expected to win another six-year term in the next presidential elections, which are scheduled for March 15–17.
