Oyo Bans The Use Of Styrofoam In Food Packaging
The Oyo State Government forbade the packaging of food with Styrofoam.
This was said by the state's commissioner of health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, at the Food Safety Stakeholders Forum on Monday in the Ministry's conference room in Ibadan.
According to Ajetunmobi, the state is now very concerned about the risk of food poisoning, the careless use of chemicals in food processing, production, and packaging, as well as other unethical practices used by food industry operators.
“The directorate of Food, Water, and Laboratory Services is saddled with the responsibility to regulate food business operations to ensure the presentation of wholesome edibles for public consumption in the state, planned to double her efforts to monitor/inspect food business premises in the state, the commissioner.
“Consequently, the use of Styrofoam for food services, storage, and other related usage in that State is also banned.”
A task force on food safety was also established by the Oyo State government. Members of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP), the Association of Canteen Workers, and the State Food Safety Management Committee are among them.
Afusat Akande, the State Ministry of Health's Director of Food, Water, and Laboratory Services, emphasized during her speech the fundamental conditions that must be fulfilled by all parties involved in the food chain in order for them to receive certification.
She states that among other things, the requirements include regular medical fitness certificates from approved state government hospitals, proof of regular fumigation of production premises by a recognized consultant from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, and water quality analysis by a recognized consultant from the Ministry of Health.
